Eleanor Oliphant is Perfectly Fine

By Gail Honeyman

I love Eleanor! She lives alone and is so painfully socially awkward. My heart broke for her, yet I was also inspired by her ability to peacefully exist in her own little world, unbothered by the fact that she has no friends. Her friendship with vodka is quite sad though. The story moves along revealing the source of her troubles and along the way she makes progress, makes a friend, and enjoys some positive change. She is such a sympathetic, colorful character you can’t help but love her. My favorite Eleanor line among so many was when she was discussing sports day from her school years and explaining how the winners would get badges they’d proudly wear the following day, “How they loved to wear those badges on their blazers the next day! As if a silver in the egg-and-spoon race was some sort of compensation for not understanding how to use an apostrophe.” Oh, how I adore Eleanor! Btw, you all know how I love the entire book process especially browsing shelves in an indy bookstore and choosing. This one ranks high in that area since I stumbled onto a brand new indy bookstore called Word After Word in downtown Truckee where I chose this after probably an hour of browsing. Please stop in when next in Truckee! I then proceeded to enjoy this fantastic book while on vacation in Tahoe. Nothing better!!
