Kitchens of the Great Midwest

By J. Ryan Stradal

Favorite book of the year!! As I have said in the past, many times my sole reason for choosing a book is the cover art. There is something so satisfying about browsing a shelf of books, viewing the covers, having one catch your eye, pulling it from the shelf, reading the inside flap and then feeling that happy inspiration to purchase it. When I see this book sitting on my shelf now, I fondly recall that afternoon in Hicklebee’s when I spotted its colorful, fun cover and decided that it intrigued me! This book introduces you to Eva, a wonderful character who despite some really tragic zingers thrown at her early goes on to create a wholly interesting and successful life making the most of her very unique talents with food. I love the structure of the book as it leaps through the story of her life and with each new chapter you are thrown forward and must be patient to see how this new set of people fits into the puzzle of her developing tale. Eva is one of those characters I hope returns to me in another book.
