Sara Gruen wrote Water for Elephants. This is another period piece but focuses on a wealthy socialite couple who take off for Scotland (he dodging military service) to search for the Loch Ness monster. That premise sounds so ridiculous that I put the book down several times. Really though, that is just the backdrop for a story about a young woman in a different time managing a challenging situation and adverse circumstances, some of her own making but many thrust upon her by the times and those around her.
