Go Set a Watchman

By Harper Lee

Welcome back, Harper. If you decide to read this, lower the bar before you open the cover. There is a reason Harper’s publisher told her to go back and revisit the characters in a different stage of life. This story lacks the soul and beauty and narrative of Mockingbird, but as I said to my book pal, Marcy, if you read it as a study in writer’s development, it is fascinating. She is clearly developing these characters and doesn’t fully have a grasp of how to express their personalities or voices or even the whole town of Maycomb. When she goes back and creates them as youngsters and in a different era under different circumstances, they come to life so much more and Mockingbird is born. So, all that said, this story falls a little flat but it is still worth the experience simply because of how it is part of the wonder that is Mockingbird. And don’t believe the negative press about Atticus, he remains the greatest father in the whole history of literature!
