The Kitchen House

By Kathleen Grissom

The complexities and tragedies of life and politics on a big slave plantation in antebellum Virginia are explored through the various storylines. Lavinia, a young Irish girl orphaned on the transatlantic journey to America, is met with utter disgust by the plantation owner for whom her father was to work (he had some nerve dying on the way over!), so she is sent to live with the slaves. A primary storyline involves the fact that Lavinia, a white girl raised in the kitchen house, grows up to feel out of place both among the slaves and also among the white ruling class. Belle is a slave with a unique provenance, who has the potential to dramatically improve her circumstances but she is in a race against time.
