The Engagements

By J. Courtney Sullivan

This is an analysis of marriage. Sullivan takes several people in varied relationships and looks at how they came to be, how they work or don’t, questions why some respect and succeed at marriage and others have no regard and actual disdain for the institution. Interspersed throughout is the story of Frances Gerety who was a young woman working in advertising in the 1940s and was the brain behind the famous tag line, “A diamond is forever.” Her life story as a successful career woman in that era is fascinating and wonderfully woven into the relationship storylines. It is a great combination of a fictional novel merged with the biography of a real person (some details obviously imagined). I read this at Tahoe and would say it is an excellent vacation book. Pack it for the snow.
