News of the World

By Paulette Jiles

Short, quick read about Jefferson Kidd who travels the northern Texas area after the Civil War reading the news to gathered crowds. During one such visit, he encounters an old acquaintance, now a free black man who has rescued a young girl who had been kidnapped by the Kiowa, after they murdered the rest of her family. He wants to return the girl to her extended family but wisely recognizes the negative ramifications of traveling alone with a young white girl. He asks Captain Kidd to get her there. The story proceeds with Kidd and Johanna making their way south through Texas, facing a host of situations and developing a lovely friendship. It is reminiscent of the movie True Grit. Another great pairing…read and then watch. Since writing this review, this has been made into a movie itself. I haven’t yet seen it.
