The Garden of Small Beginnings

By Abbi Waxman

Lilian signs up for a gardening course for a work assignment. Through it she meets a group of people who all become fast friends and share various crises and situations. My skeptical side found this simple scenario to be a little unrealistic, a little too convenient and perfect, but that is the beauty of books, one can create a lovely fictional world! Probably I was just jealous that no course I have ever taken has provided such a fabulous group. Anyhow, Lilian, her sister, her daughters, the course instructor and fellow classmates are all wonderfully enjoyable people with whom to spend several hundred pages. Lilian is processing the grief of her husband’s death and she is having a hard time even allowing happiness into her life again given the scope of her devastation. As one who sometimes (often!) has a hard time embracing happiness and good fortune, her plight spoke to me. As weird as it may sound sometimes the hardest thing to do is to allow yourself to be happy! Damn you Catholic guilt!!
