Saints for All Occasions

By J. Courtney Sullivan

The Innocents took me into Jewish culture and traditions and this one took me back into my own Irish Catholic world. Nora and Theresa immigrate to America in typical Irish fashion, with help from the local priest and various friends and relatives. The story takes you on their journey of departure, their challenges getting settled and the many crises and decisions both good and bad that shape their lives. Sullivan does an excellent job capturing the feel of the Catholic community and its many quirks and faults but also its wonderful side filled with traditions and good people. Do you all remember Brooklyn by Colm Toibin (also an awesome movie…rent it)? This book is similar; imagine if Eilis had come over with her sister

I write short, pithy, book recommendations for family and friends. My best life is comprised of my husband, my boys, my books, a quiet place, a comfortable chair, a cocktail on my side table, and a Vizsla in my lap.
