The Altruists

By Andrew Ridker

When I finished this, I wrote in my notes, “favorite book of the year”. It’s a silly thing to declare in March, and although this wonderful book was dethroned later in the year, it remains an excellent read and a top recommendation. Arthur is a college professor in financial trouble who is alienated from his two children. His wife left her considerable wealth (previously unknown to Arthur) directly to their kids, Ethan and Maggie, who are both handling their inheritances quite differently btw, and that is a big part of the story. So, Arthur decides a reunion/reconciliation would be a grand (and financially savvy) idea. One can imagine how this plays out. They are an interesting lot. Terrific book.

I write short, pithy, book recommendations for family and friends. My best life is comprised of my husband, my boys, my books, a quiet place, a comfortable chair, a cocktail on my side table, and a Vizsla in my lap.
