While the family in the story is fictional, the entire book is the result of extensive research on the Tennessee Children’s Home Society and its nefarious dealings. Once published, Lisa Wingate, began to get calls from people fearing they may have been part of this awful nightmare. The result of those communications is a follow-up book coming out soon with actual stories of those affected and how she has helped some of them locate their birth families or at least discover what happened to them (Before and After: The Incredible Real-Life Stories of Orphans Who Survived the Tennessee Children's Home Society).
