The Island of Sea Women

By Lisa See

In Pachinko are mentioned these amazing diving women from an island off Korea called Jeju. They fascinated me and when I began to research them, I discovered Lisa See had just released a novel all about them. Like Pachinko this is a sad tale about the trials and tribulations of the Korean people, specifically these incredible women who dive for abalone and other sea products and can hold their breath for ages. The work they do is unlike anything you’ve ever read about and their social order and community are very unique. It is well researched and does provide extensive education on the development of North and South Korea. That said, at times See clearly wanted to include the historical data but didn’t work it into the story very seamlessly. I welcomed the information though, so it didn’t bother me that much. Finally, I know hindsight is 20/20, but I still find it hard to believe anyone could have looked at Kim Il-Sung and thought, “Yep! That one’s a winner!” So sad how that decision continues to punish millions today.
