The Most Fun We Ever Had

By Claire Lombardo

Ok, so here we have reached my favorite book of the year (2019)! Not only is it just a superior, excellent story skillfully and beautifully executed, it is set in none other than Oak Park, IL!! How about that? The Sorensons live in their lovely home on Fair Oaks Ave. and many locations in Oak Park are identified. For that alone, I would have enjoyed this but on top of that it is far and away a superior story expertly told about a family of four daughters and two wonderful, happily married, madly-in-love parents. How refreshing! No family is all sunshine and smooth sailing though, and the Sorensons certainly face their struggles. Wendy, Violet, Liza and Grace are all unique and well-developed characters and each the product of her placement in the family order. As with all family saga stories, this peels away at the layers of familial complexities and old resentments, but beneath it all is a really lovely family. Marilyn and David are exceptional parents and entirely relatable. I think part of what I so enjoyed about it is the real-ness of it. It is just such a pleasure to read! I also appreciated they are Catholic and their faith is woven into the story. It is clear to the reader that their faith, while not prominent, forms the foundation of their lives. As I approached the end, I began to purposely read slowly because I so badly did not want to end my time with them. I actually miss them. Highest recommendation! Also, this was another winner pick from Word After Word in Truckee, CA.
