A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

By Betty Smith

I decided to add a new element to Meighan’s 2012 Christmas Book List by reaching far back into my life and pulling out a very favorite book. This one ranks in my top three of all time. I am sure it is partly due to the fact that it was on my reading list the summer before freshman year at St. Rose. It is a beautiful story about an Irish immigrant family at the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Francie Nolan lives in Brooklyn and is confident, smart, clever and responsible. She provides an excellent role model for any young girl. She and her family struggle with poverty yet manage to maintain their dignity and values and persevere in the face of great odds against them. It is a classic everyone should read.
