The Sandcastle Girls

By Chris Bohjalian

Sad, heavy historical fiction yet informative for one who knew little about this period of world history. As the world is approaching World War I, the Ottoman Empire embarks on a systematic genocide of the Armenian population. They like to call it "a relocation". This all takes place in a town called Aleppo, which is in the papers today as it is drowning in ethnic conflict once again. It is very disturbing in its descriptions of the monstrous treatment of the Armenians at the hands of the Turks. There is a love story floating around the background as well but mainly it is a story of the utter devastation of war.
