Orhan’s Inheritance

By Aline Ohanesian

This one takes you to the darkness of the Armenian Genocide, a historic event that is woefully under recognized. Don’t let that heavy topic dissuade you though. It tells the story of the evidently completely unacceptable relationship between a Turk and an Armenian. The relationship only comes to light upon Orhan’s grandfather’s death when he inexplicably leaves the house to an unknown woman in Los Angeles of all places. Orhan must travel there to figure out what is going on. The contrast of generations in their feelings and understanding about the genocide was fascinating and well done by Ohanesian. As an American having grown up in a culture of amazing acceptance lacking barriers and rules about who may associate with whom, it is fascinating to get inside the cultural taboos and rules experienced by many around the world in different times.
