The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street

By Susan Jane Gilman

This was my favorite book of the year. It is the story of Lillian Dunkle who goes from abandoned immigrant orphan to being an ice cream business tycoon. She is rough around the edges as a result of her hard beginning, but underneath it all she is a no-nonsense, good person. I really liked her. You get to experience NYC immigrant tenements in the early 1900s and move through the decades. Entrepreneurism, ice cream history, family relations, friendships, the American Dream, resilience, determination, a woman ahead of her timeā€¦it is all in here. It is very enjoyable. Btw, I picked this one up at Target of all places! You never know where you will find an awesome book.
