The Japanese Lover

By Isabelle Allende

This book grabbed me because it is set in the Sea Cliff neighborhood of San Francisco and I am a sucker for books set in my hometown. It begins in the 1940s but carries you into the 1980s, which is my San Francisco. It takes you from the prejudices of WWII and Japanese internment camps through the difficult days of a mystery illness sweeping through the San Francisco gay community in the early 1980s. In both eras exist social stresses that lead to a lot of pain for and poor choices by the characters.
