When You Read This

By Mary Adkins

Iris dies at age 33, but despite that this is not depressing. As she realized the gravity of her illness and rapidly approaching death, she put thoughts about it all on a blog. She leaves behind a request for her friend and business colleague to publish her blog musings into a book. It seems a simple enough request and Simon desperately wants to do this for Iris. The only problem is Iris’s sister is not on board and she must okay anything to do with her sister’s estate. Simon and Jade don’t know each other, so the story unfolds through emails, phone messages, text messages, social media postings, legal documents, and all manner of written communication in today’s virtual world. All while Iris speaks through her blog posts. Simon’s new assistant, Carl, provides excellent comic relief amidst the sadness of Simon and Jade processing Iris’s death. If this is ever made into a movie, Adam DeVine must be Carl.
