Instructions for a Heatwave

By Maggie O’Farrell

Another family drama! This one centers on an Irish Catholic family living in London in the evidently famous heat wave of 1976. It is always fun to read about a family with characteristics similar to mine and even takes place in the same era in which I grew up. There is Gretta, the mother whose husband has simply vanished. She calls upon her three grown children, Michael, Monica and Aoife to come help her address this baffling situation. Although in classic Irish Catholic mother style, she doesn’t just ask outright but manipulates and guilts her grown children into coming to her aid. Like The Burgess Boys, the siblings have their own extensive sets of baggage both from their childhood but also their adult lives. As they all come back together with the singular purpose of figuring out where their dad went, they address some of the issues packed away in those heavy bags.
