The Language of Flowers

By Vanessa Diffenbaugh

Victoria Jones, lifelong ward of the state of California, is emancipated at age 18 and amazingly finds work in a florist shop.  As you can imagine having grown up in that stellar California government system, poor Victoria has more than a bit of a chip on her shoulder.  She had one foster mother, Elizabeth, who loved her dearly and is the one who taught Victoria about flowers, but unfortunately, Elizabeth is burdened with her own set of baggage, which complicates things for both of them.  Despite her justifiably rough edges, Victoria is a great character and a beautiful resilient spirit.  It is my favorite type of story, one that examines relationships and explains why people do what they do and how they land where they land.  Bonus…the story takes place in San Francisco and some of it even out in my Sunset District!  A very enjoyable read!
