The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing

By Mira Jacob

As a fourth generation San Franciscan with ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War, I always find it interesting to read about the cultural adjustment of new immigrant families. The Eapen family came here in the 1970s and struggled to maintain their Indian culture and traditions while Amina, the daughter, tried to embrace an American life. Her father left India to the resentment of much of his family. Years later he is having bizarre encounters with those long-dead relations. Amina’s mother calls her home in a convoluted way (maternal guilt and manipulation transcend all cultures!) to help.
